A mechanized device called a wood gasifier is used to heat wood chips, or other organic matter, and liberate the combustible material within. Once released the gasses can either be burned for heat or combusted in an engine to produce power. The simplest element of a wood gasifier is that is a canister that is insulated to keep in the heat.

A small power station, movable and self contained, is one of the decided advantages of the gasifier. A four cylinder engine needs an oil barrel sized gas producer, but if the fuel is a waste product, the gas is just as good.

The types of fuel commonly used will be waste wood chips, chipped branches, coconut waste, rice and corn husks and even battery chicken shed litter. In certain parts a fuel crop such as a quick growing willow may be used.

Could this be a fresh source of fuel? Commercial agribusiness needs to expend money disposing of large amounts of waste to landfill. The gasifyer residue, or char, is an excellent soil conditioner, making it a very environmentally-friendly alternative.

A large industrial gasifier might have to be used in an area heating project or in a large farm yard waste energy producer in order to obtain economies of scale.

But, I am more concerned with smaller gasifyers to subsidize house hold costs, or off grid living.

The end result with home gasification is a clean burning fuel with little contamination. An additional advantage.

Many claim that 1 gallon of gasolene is comparable to 20lbs of dry chipped wood. A gasifier of appropriate size will supply all the gas to run a selected engine, the bigger the gasifier the bigger the engine. A gasifyer does not necessarily call for any external power although this will help to start the machine, someone will still have to fuel the machine. Once working the induction from an internal combustion engine will draw air through the hearth, beneficially making it self sustaining.
